He told BBC Radio Manchester: "It's a situation where I'll be amongst other applicants for the position of manager.
"I've been told I'm in charge until 7 May, until someone tells me differently that's the position at the moment."
The former Wigan and Tranmere manager was unable to save the club from relegation, as the 2-0 defeat by Crewe confirmed relegation from the Football League for the first time in 106 years.
A statement on the Stockport's website has now invited applications to be the club's manager next season, as they look to be promoted at the first attempt.
Mathias added: "I think they obviously wanted to do it the right way and I think this is it.
"Maybe they have made mistakes in the past and they don't want it to happen again.
"At the moment it's a situation where we've got directors and shareholders in the club and haven't actually got a chairman as such, so I think it's a majority decision."
Mathias initially joined the club as a technical advisor, but was asked to take over leading the club's relegation fight from coach Peter Ward.
Despite the turmoil around the club Mathias says he has enjoyed his time and would like to continue in his position.
"There are players to be sorted out, it's not a nice period for players as some will be coming and some will be going," he said
"They've got to do it pretty quick with the situation the way it is, players are going to be told if they are in a position to stay at the club or not.
"But since I've been here I've enjoyed it with the players and it's been an absolutely fantastic time for me getting back on the training ground again."
