Saints spent an hour trying to break down a resolute County outfit until Rickie Lambert put the hosts on their way. Papa Waigo then converted from close range to complete the victory.
A frustrated Ablett said: "I thought we were our own worst enemies in the second half.
"At half-time I was pleased as we had restricted Southampton to long-range shots and the odd flick.
"But in the second-half one or two looked frightened to take responsibility and we did not compete or keep the ball well enough."
