Jermal Johnson struck the only goal of a desperately poor game as County benefited from an Exeter side lacking in confidence. However, Ablett was not entirely happy with his team's performance.
"We didn't play particularly well I have to say and we are disappointed with the first half. We are bitterly disappointed with the second half performance, but we got the only goal of the game," he said.
"We defended a lot more resolutely than we have been doing, certainly than the last two games. I think we were exceptional defensively, which obviously gives us a basis to try and win the game from.
"We felt Exeter are not quite at their best and are in the middle of a difficult run and we felt we could get something from the game. You could say the game plan worked because we won, but we know we can play a lot better than that.
"But don't get me wrong, we are absolutely elated with the result. The whole back four played really well and that is the kind of effort we will need if we are to get close to the teams above us even."
