How are we here?! Why are we here?! I try to find an answer for this horrible decline.
13th December 1997. Recently promoted Stockport County hammer Tranmere Rovers at home and go 8th in the Nationwide Division One 3-1 at Edgeley Park.13th December 2005. Recently relegated Stockport County face relegation to the Nationwide Conference after 7 games without a win.
True, we had momentum from going up but WHEN did the bad momentum hit us?
On the 13th December 1997 EVERY team in the Division are now above us! We had 16 teams below us that included Manchester City, Portsmouth, Birmingham City, Reading, Norwich, QPR & Wolves. Take Portsmouth for example, they were 23rd in Division One and we were 15 points above them after 22 games.
We finished that season 8th in the SECOND tier of English football. The next season we finished 16th in Division One. Now considering a decade ago (1989) we finished 20th in the then Barclays Forth Division, just 9 points above relegation, this has to be considered quite good.
But expectations were high and Gary Megson gets the sack after a dubious meeting with then chairman Brendon Elwood, apparently he was applying for too many jobs whilst managing Stockport.
So we've solved that then, Megson is sacked and Stockport County are left manager less in the second tier of English football with a bunch of relatively good players.
Andy Kilner comes too power, the youngest manager in the football league then and he had a wide array of players to work with. He also had the chance to sign his own players, mainly Scandinavian, as he brought in 3 Finnish internationals.
So then it started, the great decline.
Kilner goes downwards, puts us on the verge of relegation sparking huge demo's and gets sacked.
Former England international Carlton Palmer is appointed as player manager and he puts us on the verge of relegation sparking huge demo's and gets sacked.
Former Man Utd and Northern Irish star Sammy McIlroy is appointed. He takes a detour of the relegations and keeps us up with the clubs longest unbeaten run in 50 years. We didn't lose in 2 months. But of course all good things come to an end and in the November of the following season he was sacked.
Chris Turner was appointed, we were relegated from League One and now he has got us at the bottom of League Two.
So if the current trend carries on Turner should be sacked soon. But then the situation of the owners came in. Has that got anything to do with the decline? During those 4 manages 3 different owners were in charge. Brendon Elwood, Brian Kennedy & The Stockport County Supporters Trust.
Can the current owners afford to sack Chris Turner? No they (we) can't.
This begs the question, Can Turner help us out of this marathon decline? The fans deserve better than this. 2 relegations on the trot will be an embarrassment, never mind 3 in 4 seasons.
The answer HAS to be YES. Because he's not going to be sacked and it doesn't seem as if he will resign. So whereas a few of us may want Turner out we are going to have to put up with it for now, but the club does need to realise that the fans will not put up with going further and further down.
At least we will still have memories of beating City those times eh... Hardiker and Dinning were made living legends for kicking a ball into a net when we were once in Division One y'know....
